I was drawn to his [Editors of Color] profile because of his background in history, literature, and religion, and from our initial emails, Dabian made clear that he was entirely comfortable working with depictions of Black characters who lived almost a century ago. He read my manuscript, set in a racially diverse town in the 1930s, with awareness both of the historical reality of the time and the concerns that a contemporary reader would bring to the work. By way of comparison, another sensitivity reader I had approached acknowledged she was unable to view the past other than through a contemporary lens. Dabian read my work promptly and returned both in-line comments/questions and a detailed three-page report that focused on exactly those scenes I had asked him to pay particular attention to.
